Description: A vulnerability has been identified in PerlEdit, which allows malicious people to crash PerlEdit from remote.
The problem is that PerlEdit listens on port 1956/tcp and doesn't handle requests properly. By connecting to the service and then disconnecting, it is possible to crash PerlEdit, which causes any unsaved work to be lost.
This has been confirmed in version 1.08 for Windows. However, previous version and other platforms may also be affected.
Solution: Use a personal firewall to filter access.
Provided and/or discovered by: Donnie Werner
Changelog: 2003-10-09: Newly released version 1.08 is still vulnerable.
