Description:
A vulnerability has been identified in an ActiveX component which is installed and marked as "safe" when using Symantec's online Security Check.

The problem is that the "CompareVersionStrings" function doesn't verify input properly. This allows malicious web sites to activate the ActiveX component and supply very long maliciously crafted strings which possibly could execute arbitrary code.

Because the ActiveX component has been marked as safe, it may be activated by any other web site without warning or prompting the user.

Solution:
Remove "Symantec RuFSI Utility Class" or "Symantec RuFSI Registry Information Class" from your system.

Secunia recommend that ActiveX and scripting is disallowed for all sites. Only allow scripting on a site per site basis.

An updated version of the ActiveX component has been placed on Symantec's web site. However, the kill bit does not seem to be set for the old component. This allows malicious sites to re-install the old vulnerable ActiveX component, because it is digitally signed and marked as safe.

Changelog:
2003-06-24 Update to class name, as it may be different depending on if you made an online virus scan or security check first.
2003-06-25 Symantec has released an updated ActiveX. This, however, does not eliminate the vulnerability.
