Description:
A vulnerability has been identified in Internet Explorer (IE), which can be exploited by malicious people to conduct Cross-Site Scripting attacks against a user.

The vulnerability is caused due to an input validation error in the handling of XML files. The problem is that IE displays the URL of the requested XML file, when a parse error is encountered. This may result in execution of arbitrary script code in a user's browser session by inserting the code in a link.

In order to exploit the vulnerability, a malicious person will have to find a server with a XML file, which cannot be parsed properly by IE or MSXML. The malicious person would then have to trick a user into visiting a malicious website or click a malicious link.

Successful exploitation can result in disclosure of various information (eg. cookie-based authentication information) associated with the site with the exploitable XML file, or inclusion of malicious content, which the user thinks is part of the real website.

An example was included in the original advisory:
http://[host.with.unparsable.xml.file]/flaw.xml?<script>alert(document.cookie)</script>

Solution:
The vulnerability has been fixed silently in some cumulative security update.
