Description: A vulnerability has been discovered in newsPHP, which allows malicious members to become administrators.
The problem is that the database uses "<~>" as a delimiter. However, the "<~>" character sequence is not filtered nor escaped from input in the "email address" field. This allows malicious members to inject arbitrary fields in the database including the attribute setting privileges.
The vulnerability has been reported in newsPHP v216. However, other versions may also be affected.
Solution: The product is not supported anymore.
Use another product.
Edit the source code so that the "<~>" character sequence and possible other characters such as "%" and "\" are filtered.
Provided and/or discovered by: Peter Winter-Smith of Team UEC
