Description: A vulnerability has been identified in HP-UX, which can be exploited by malicious, local users to escalate their privileges.
The vulnerability is caused due to the shar utility creating temporary files with predictable names in the "/tmp" directory. This can be exploited via symlink attacks to e.g. overwrite arbitrary files with another user's privileges.
The vulnerability affects HP9000 servers running HP-UX B.11.00, B.11.04, and B.11.11.
Solution: Apply following patches available at:
http://itrc.hp.com
HP-UX B.11.11:
PHCO_29010
HP-UX B.11.04:
PHCO_29697
HP-UX B.11.00:
PHCO_28954
Use the "TMPDIR" environment variable to specify a safe temporary directory.
Changelog: 2004-01-25: Added link to CERT vulnerability note.
