Description: A vulnerability has been reported in HP-UX, which can be exploited by malicious, local users to escalate their privileges.
The vulnerability is casued due to boundary errors in some suid "root" SD (Software Distributor) utilities when handling the "LANG" environment variable. These can be exploited to cause buffer overflows by setting an overly long, specially crafted string.
Successful exploitation may allow execution of arbitrary code with escalated privileges.
The vulnerability affects HP9000 servers running HP-UX releases B.11.00, B.11.04 (VVOS), and B.11.11.
Solution: Apply following patches from:
http://itrc.hp.com
HP-UX B.11.00:
PHCO_28847
HP-UX B.11.04:
PHCO_30006
HP-UX B.11.11:
PHCO_28848
Provided and/or discovered by: Yang Jilong, NSFOCUS Security Team.
Changelog: 2003-11-13: More information released.
2004-01-01: Added information about version B.11.04 (VVOS).
